Dutch PM Rutte: Supporting Greece inevitable

After yesterday’s good news about Geert Wilders’ acquittal, Dutch politics took a turn for the worse and the ridiculous again. Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) believes that extra financial support for Greece may be inevitable. He said this after the first day of the EU-top meeting in Brussels.

The decision on giving extra support has not been taken yet because the Greek parliament still has to agree with the deep cuts required, but Rutte anticipates that the new financial support, worth 85 billion euros will be given.

Greece

Greece, the country where democracy has been invented once upon a time, is a country with approx. 11 million citizens. It’s socialist president Papoulias has been in his function since march 2005, while it’s social-democrat Prime Minister Papandreou has been in office since oktober 2009.

The country has been suffering from its generally poor competitive strength compared to most European countries, as well as its inefficient government and the high degree of corruption in both its government and economy. As a result of the international credit crisis and continued excessive spending, Greece got into a large economic crisis with direct consequences for the euro zone.

Netherlands

According to recent polls in the Netherlands, a large majority of the Dutch population is against further financial support for Greece. The major sentiment seems to be that Greece didn’t stick to its agreements on earlier loans and is still not taking proper action to warrant the immense financial support.

The financial crisis has also hit the Netherlands, just like any other country in the world. Dutch Minister of Finance de Jager is generally considered to be the strict money manager of the entire European Union but even he has recently stated supporting the new financial support, arguing that there’s no alternative.
